Everything You Need to Know about Cannabidiol

CBD Products

In states that have legalized medical marijuana, cannabidiol or CBD oil has become one of the hottest new medical products in decades. It’s one of the many hundreds of “phytocannabinoids” which are unique to cannabis. Today, therapeutic uses of CBD are being tested and confirmed by researchers and medical physicians. This non-intoxicating form of marijuana is credited with treating a host of medical disorders. There is CBD for asthma, anxiety, epileptic seizures, and pain, among many others.

CBD is extracted from the buds and flowers of hemp plants. It doesn’t cause intoxication, as the “high” in cannabis is attributed to another component called tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). Many people want the health benefits of cannabis without the high, and this makes CBD an appealing treatment option for people. CBD is also easy to ingest as oil.

How Does It Work?

To understand CBD, you need to understand what it does to the body. Both CBD and THC interact with our bodies in different ways. They mimic and augment the effects of compounds in the body known as endogenous cannabinoids, which are so named because they are similar to the compounds found in cannabis. They regulate many functions in the human system, including anti-inflammatory responses, the immune system, appetite, mood, anxiety, and sleep, among others. They also work with a series of receptors known collectively as the endocannabinoid system.

The discovery of the endocannabinoid system significantly improved the understanding of health and disease and advanced research into the latter. It helps explain why cannabis is widely consumed despite its illegal status, why CBD and THC are very versatile compounds and why they have such mood-altering effects.

CBD has antipsychotic effects, and although these effects are not completely clear, CBD seems to prevent the breakdown of some chemicals found in the brain, which affect mood, pain, and mental function. When the level of this chemical increases in the blood, and it is not broken down, psychotic symptoms such as those associated with schizophrenia, are reduced. CBD also blocks the psychoactive effects of THC and reduces pain and anxiety.

How to Consume CBD

CBD can be taken in many different ways, like CBD oils, CBD edibles, CBD topicals, and CBD beverages. CBD offers high bioavailability, meaning they are absorbed fast and used by the system efficiently. They are easy to use, as all you need to do is pour the recommended amount of oil under the tongue using the dropper and wait for a few seconds before swallowing. CBD edibles are absorbed differently from CBD oils. They take a bit longer to kick in after absorption, but the effects last longer. CBD topicals are for people looking for on-the-spot spot support, while CBD beverages can be consumed as CBD-infused coffee or CBD tea.

The CBD Challenge

Cannabidiol is a molecule, not a miracle, and many people can benefit tremendously from its wide range of medical use. The driving force behind CBD experiments is finding out how to optimize all its therapeutic uses. The advent of CBD oil has transformed public conversation about the adoption of medical cannabis. It’s no longer a question of whether cannabis is good for you or not, the key issue is extracting all its benefits to the maximum.

Many people are still using CBD as an add-on therapy to their existing treatments, given its low-risk profile. And most health professionals know little about cannabis to adequately advise patients regarding the right dosage. All that exists is those who’ve learned through trial and error and openly share information with the community.
