Ever since I instagrammed a photo of my work station, I have gotten so many questions about my makeup brush storage. The main question…”Where did you get those?” I must admit…I have a pretty awesome answer…I made them myself and it’s VERY easy!!!
I don’t know why I didn’t post this blog sooner, considering I did get so many comments and questions about this storage method. I have to thank Ange, of Hairspray & Highheels, for wanting to include me in her “10 DIY Makeup Storage Ideas” blog post. She gave me the push I needed to give you all a little insight about this pretty cool and decorative way of storing your makeup brushes. So let’s begin!
The first and most important step…head to your local art supply store. I am a Michael’s Arts & Crafts type gal, so I’ll be including links from their online store.
The first item you need to pick up is a glass vase. Any glass vase will do, as it all depends on your taste. I have two, square, clear glass vases at 5″L x 5″ W x 4.5′ H; and another square, clear glass vase at 3.25″L x 4″W x 5.5″ H (I needed to add the 3rd glass after IMATS because I needed more room).
Second, you will need beads or any type of filler that you would like, to hold your brushes in the upright position. I don’t know the exact filler that I have for my brush holders, but I explain it as a clear, plastic bead that you would find in the floral arrangement section of your art supply store. Once again this selection depends on what you like best!
You can even use products that may be in your pantry! Coffee beans, popcorn kernels or even rice will work! In the beginning, I used rice, and although it worked just fine, it left a layer of powder on the brush handle. This is why I moved to the beads.
You can stop at this point if you would like, but I went the extra mile and wanted to have a little more fun! You can add stickers, letters or a bow to your vase to spice it up a bit. I opted for scrapbook letters and labeled my brush holders based on my eye and face brushes. The third vase, I labeled “Niki” because once again, I had to add another vase to accommodate all my brushes. This vase holds my smaller face brushes including contouring, highlighting and concealer brushes.
Lastly…you need your makeup brushes and then you are all good to go!
As you can see, my eye makeup brush holder also holds a pair of tweezers, an eyelash curler and a few hair clips on the outside edge of the vase.
Furthermore, towards the back-end of the vase, I have placed three dual-ended brushes across the top, held in place my other eye makeup brushes.
I hope this post was helpful for those looking for a new storage method! I’ve seen people selling makeup brush holders like these on Etsy and other homemade craft sites; and although it is a pretty good idea and I commend them for their efforts to make some extra cash, all they do what I described above. Also, if you do it yourself…you’re saving yourself a few bucks!
So if you need a fun and useful way to store your brushes, definitely give this method a shot!
